KATC-TV reports that the Louisiana Republican Party voted to censure Senator Cassidy over Trump‘s impeachment.
The Louisiana Republican Party Executive Committee, on Saturday, voted unanimously to censure Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-LA) for voting to convict former President Donald Trump during Trump’s second impeachment trial, the report said.
Cassidy was one of seven Republicans who voted ‘guilty’ during the trial, joining all 50 Democrats who cast a total of 57 votes. Democrats failed to obtain the two-thirds majority needed to convict the former president on charges of “sedition.
The Republican Committee issued the following statement.
“The Executive Committee of the Louisiana Republican Party, voted unanimously to condemn Senator Bill Cassidy’s vote earlier today to impeach former President Trump on charges of conviction.”
In a tweet shortly after 3 p.m., the Louisiana Republican Party said, “We strongly condemn that Senator Cassidy voted to convict former President Trump today. Fortunately, clear heads prevailed and President Trump was acquitted of the impeachment charges filed against him.”
Cassidy said after the trial that he “voted to convict President Trump because he is guilty.” His colleague, Sen. John Kennedy (D-Mass.), voted not guilty.
