Biden hopes to close Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, prison for terrorism suspects during his term

The White House said today that President Joe Biden hopes to close the Guantanamo Bay prison in Cuba, where terrorism suspects are being held, during his term in office. The U.S. Department of State said that the U.S. Department of Justice has been working with the U.S. Department of State to develop a new policy for the U.S. Department of Justice.

The government’s response to the question of whether it is possible to close the Guantanamo Bay prison during Joe Biden’s presidency was to ask White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki at a press conference, and she replied, “That is certainly our goal and intention.”

She said the Biden Administration is working through the National Security Council to assess the current situation from the former dynasty.

Former President Donald Trump, a Republican, expressed interest in keeping Guantanamo Bay prison and “filling it with bad guys” during the 2016 campaign. Trump has maintained the same position since his election.

Barack Obama, who served as president before Trump, promised to release some of the Guantanamo Bay prisoners during his presidency, but he was unsuccessful in getting congressional support. Biden was Obama’s vice president that year.

The Guantanamo Bay military prison houses prisoners associated with the U.S. war on terror, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, a Pakistani national who claimed to be the head of the 9/11 attacks.

After 9/11, the U.S. military quickly established the Guantanamo Bay prison at the U.S. naval base on the eastern tip of the island of Cuba under the presidency of George W. Bush Jr.

The prison still holds about 40 prisoners, 26 of whom are considered too dangerous to be released, but the legal process has been delayed because the case is too complex.
