Yesterday (12th) was the first day of the Lunar New Year of the Ox, and the situation on the streets of Flushing in the Chinese community could be described as “cold”, not only in terms of the weather but also in terms of the atmosphere.
The temperature was dropping and by the afternoon the temperature was only -4 degrees Celsius, the wind was bitterly cold and the atmosphere was the coldest in years due to the Epidemic. Some businesses could not withstand the impact of the epidemic and some Chinese businesses simply closed for the day because of the poor business and gave their employees a day off. Most importantly, the community was left without a joyful, celebratory atmosphere amidst a CCP virus outbreak that put everyone’s health and lives at great risk.
The only thing that added to the lively atmosphere in Flushing were the street vendors, who were occupying the streets without permits, but at least added some Life and vitality to Flushing.
Although the state announced the resumption of indoor dine-in dining at a maximum of 25 percent capacity on the day of the Chinese New Year, the restaurants had very few patrons, and since the outbreak figures in Flushing are still high (the average diagnosis rate in the 11355 zip code was 12.3 percent for the seven days from Feb. 3 to 9), many people do not choose dine-in dining, preferring to place orders on Food ordering platforms or buy take-out. ordering platforms or buying take-out to eat at Home.
This New Year, for many families, was not a New Year’s celebration, but a Time of sadness – a time of celebration, but a time of loss. -Some families have lost loved ones in the epidemic, some have lost their jobs, and some are unable to reunite because of travel restrictions or because they are afraid to leave their homes.
The epidemic has not yet subsided, the future is uncertain, the future is not yet known, where is the light, where is the way out? Everyone is more or less thinking about it. This is a special New Year, a heavy New Year, and perhaps a New Year in which everyone should take advantage of the silence to reflect and introspect.
