UN human rights group adopts resolution demanding Myanmar release Aung San Suu Kyi

The Geneva forum of the U.N. Human Rights Council on Feb. 12 called on Burma to release Aung San Suu Kyi and other officials and to refrain from violence against people protesting the military coup.

According to Reuters, the 47-member UN’s top human rights organization unanimously adopted the resolution proposed by the United Kingdom and the European Union (EU) without a vote, although China and Russia later said they had “nothing to do” with the consensus.

Myanmar’s envoy had previously said he “did not accept” the resolution.
