On the evening of Feb. 11, the 30th day of the Gengzi year on the Chinese calendar, CCTV’s Spring Festival Gala went on as scheduled. If the Spring Festival Gala has degenerated from entertainment to party propaganda in the eyes of the people over the past few years, then after the turbulent year 2020, some Chinese people have started to comment that “people who woke up took the Spring Festival Gala as a joke”.
CCTV claims that the main screen of this year’s Spring Festival Gala stage uses a 61.4m x 12.4m 8K ultra-high definition giant screen, which is claimed to be the first to use AI+VR naked eye 3D studio technology to meld virtual space with the real world.
Liu Shihui, a US-based Chinese human rights lawyer, told Radio Free Asia that the Spring Festival Gala has long been reduced to a cover-up for the Chinese Communist Party, an “embroidered pillow and a bag of grass”, and that the totalitarian system’s promotion of fancy technology and disregard for human rights constitutes a great irony.
“After so many years, the Spring Festival Gala has now become a disgrace to China, a comical joke. Can so many human rights disasters in China be covered up with a song and dance? If we really return power to the people, instead of making arrests here and there, or setting up millions of concentration camps – without the Spring Festival Gala, people will still sing and dance and be happy from the bottom of their hearts. Whitewashing can only make things awkward.”
Right after the 2019 Spring Festival Gala aired, a number of people in the country spat out that they were already unimpressed with the program, such as Mr. Wang in Anhui Province, who said in an interview with Epoch Times that many people saw that the real intention behind the Spring Festival Gala was to brainwash hundreds of millions of people in China and was a propaganda tool for the Communist Party, “I hope there won’t be a few more sessions of this Spring Festival Gala.”
Others said, “I haven’t watched the Spring Festival Gala for 12 years, and my friends around me haven’t watched it for several years, and people in our group rarely talk about it except for Liu Qian’s fake magic.” “In our eyes, the Spring Festival Gala used to be an official announcement with soft text, and people still take it as a spit; now the Spring Festival Gala is a party announcement, more and more like a model show, and no one even wants to spit, it’s ‘senseless’.”
In 2020, Chinese people even experienced the impact of the CCP virus (New Crown virus) and witnessed the CCP’s crackdown on the oppression of Hong Kong people. These personal experiences have intensified the people’s disgust with the whitewashed Spring Festival Gala.
Speaking to Radio Free Asia, Wuhan resident Yu Quanhong said, “What do you mean by “victory” for those who were quarantined, for those who had people die in their families? Is this the right word to use for them? It’s just that the government and the staff feel victorious and want to cheer.”
According to Gao Yu, an independent journalist in Beijing, “Balcony” does not dare to talk about Li Wenliang, but only dares to bake a joyful group phase, usually talking about Dreams, and the party is to sing them: “According to their will, it is very complete to bring 2020 to an end. They dug in, neither to show the suffering of Life, and the people lost their freedom, not allowed to go out with songs, the whole is a ‘joy’, a dream.”
In response to the invitation to Jackie Chan, Andy Lau and other Hong Kong and Taiwan artists to support the Spring Festival Gala, Liu Shihui argued, “(Jackie Chan) he still has the heart to whitewash the Communist tyranny, which is really shameless. This uprooting of the Hong Kong protest movement (by the Chinese Communist Party) is so shocking that the whole world finds it unbelievable. The wound has not yet healed, the gurgling blood is still gushing out, what can be done with more singing and dancing?”
Before this year’s Spring Festival Gala, some netizens semi-jokingly released an audience distribution chart to show the attitudes of different regions towards the show. One tweeter said.
“This is the Spring Festival Gala audience distribution map, why do I feel like an Epidemic severity distribution map?”
“I loved watching it when I was a kid, but now I have stopped watching it for more than a decade, including all domestic TV channels such as CCTV series. After waking up and rejecting all propaganda.”
“Have long stopped watching for more than 20 years, fooling the people.”
“Extended version of news broadcasts.”
“The elderly in the Family will watch it, but every Time they watch an hour or so and turn off the TV with a curse.”
Free Asia pointed to public data showing that the Spring Festival Gala ratings have only fluctuated around 30 percent in recent years.
