The White House issued an announcement that President Joe Biden spoke with Chinese President Xi Jinping by phone on Feb. 10, U.S. Time, the first call between the two since Biden took office on Jan. 20.
The White House announcement said Biden made clear to Xi that U.S. priorities are safeguarding the security, prosperity, health and way of Life of Americans and maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific. Biden highlighted to his counterpart concerns about Beijing‘s economic coercion and injustice, its crackdown on Hong Kong, human rights abuses in Xinjiang and increasingly assertive moves in the region, including toward Taiwan. The two also exchanged views on combating the new coronavirus pneumonia (COVID-19) outbreak, climate change and stopping the proliferation of weapons.

“On the morning of Chinese New Year‘s Eve, February 11, President Xi Jinping spoke by phone with U.S. President Joe Biden. The two heads of state paid their respects to each other on the Chinese New Year of the Ox and exchanged in-depth views on bilateral relations and major international and regional issues.”
