Frontline interview: mainland owners sell live pigs with swine fever virus

The pork industry on the mainland has been hit by African swine fever and other impacts, and some farming enterprises have closed down as a result. Conscientious people in the industry reveal some of the insider secrets that are not known to the outside world.

A few days ago the news of severe winter swine fever in mainland China and less than 100 pounds of pigs being sent to slaughterhouses drew attention. According to the data published by Shandong Yong Yi Consulting, 17% of the pigs sent to the slaughterhouse in the last week of January this year weighed less than 90 pounds.

Pigs under 100 pounds sent to slaughterhouse are morbid pigs

Zhang Hua (a pseudonym), a sizable farming owner on the mainland, confirmed the above relevant information to Epoch Times and disclosed more insider information about this industry.

He said that the pigs under 100 pounds that are sold early “must be sick, (otherwise) who would buy them so early!”

He further introduced that the slaughterhouse had kept the price cost very low, only 5 or 6 yuan a catty, a 100 catty pig should be sold for 500 or 600 yuan, but the cost of the 100 catty pig should be more than 1,000 yuan.

He stressed, “No one will sell, not stupid to this point, certainly had a disease pig, he can not control. 7 kg piglets normal, are sold to 1,500 yuan, 1,600 yuan. The 100 pounds of relatively sick pigs, the infection surface is large, sold out, the most sold 5, 6 hundred dollars, right.”

Swine fever peak in the north before March peak in the south in June

Zhang Hua introduced, “the peak incidence of African swine fever, the South in June, more rain disinfection is not convenient. The north is before March, because it is very cold there is no way to disinfect. The effective temperature of disinfection water in 10 to 15 degrees, the northern minus 20 degrees, the water sprayed out are frozen, frozen after no disinfection effect, there is no killing effect on the virus.”

He gave the example of the 2019 swine fever onset pattern, the north first onset, turn a circle from the south upwards. It is after the onset in the north, followed by Guangdong, Guangxi, and then backwards to Jiangxi, Jiangxi is the latest onset.

He explained this trajectory is rather strange because, after the northern swine fever, pig prices immediately fell, some people transfer pigs to the south, hoping to sell prices can be higher, so that the virus will be brought to the south, the same reason will also transfer the virus back to Jiangxi.

Eliminated sows fell to 8 yuan or even lower

Zhang Hua introduced, this year is different, January and February the African swine fever is very serious, not only the north is very serious, the south of Guangdong, Guangxi side are beginning.

“During this period of Time, the price of eliminated sows fell from 11, 12, to 9, 8, and now 8 can not be bought. What’s the reason? Because the culling volume is too big.” He said.

“Under normal circumstances, how can such high pig prices go to cull sows? And of the sows culled, I got information from the industry that more than 30 to 50 percent of the sows culled are sows with fetuses. Who would cull a sow with fetus? It must be infected, and when this pig is infected, all the surrounding pigs have to be dealt with. Even the whole unit has to be treated, the whole building has to be treated.”

This year, the price of piglets (7 kg) rose from more than 9 hundred to 1,500 to 1,600

Zhang Hua introduced, now the price of pig seedlings rose, 7 kg of pig seedlings from more than 9 hundred at once to 1,500 to 1,600, and very sought-after.

He received information about people looking for piglets in three or five days. Those who have pig farms but no pig seedlings are facing to lose money.

He thinks there are two reasons for this, one is the impact of African swine fever. The other one is a kind of “viral diarrhea” in piglets. There are many breeding enterprises, piglets born on the third day to 15 days, this period of dilution after dehydration died, basically no rescue.

“This situation causes a large number of piglets to die during December and January. By March, when the temperature rises, this disease is basically no problem.” He said.

“But before March will have a direct impact on next year’s July and August pig prices will be very high, will definitely be above 19 yuan.”

“Vaccine virus” brings huge damage to farmers

Zhang Hua said that in addition to the pressure and risk brought to farmers by swine fever itself, another pressure and risk comes from the “vaccine virus”, which is to inject pigs with genetic deficiencies in the vaccine, resulting in new strains of virus in pigs.

He learned from the domestic research swine fever professionals that “now 20% to 30% of domestic pig morbidity detected is genetically deficient ‘vaccine virus’, especially in the southern region, the infection is also very common.”

He said that once this virus flows into the pig farm, because the symptoms are not obvious, the naked eye can not be observed, and when you find it has spread widely. “There is no way to spot-clean pig farms, which is the same as this enterprise gave a death sentence and a six-month reprieve from execution. Half-dead lasts 6 months later, this business is going to collapse.”
