The crime against Chinese elders happened again. Chinese eyewitness Tracy Chen said that at about 1 p.m. on the 9th, a robbery occurred at the Bank of America on Marina Blvd. in East Bay San Leandro. A 60-year-old man was robbed of nearly $20,000 in cash by several African-American robbers. Tracy posted a video of the incident on social media to remind Chinese people to be safe and to stand up and speak out against the crime.
Ali Khan, a spokesman for the St. Leon’s Police Department, confirmed to this reporter that this case did occur. According to the police, the Asian elder was standing in line at the bank, ready to deposit cash, when four African-American robbers pushed the victim to the ground and robbed him. The victim suffered minor injuries during the fall. One of the robbers was armed with a handgun and the four fled the scene in a car after committing the crime.
The victim was targeted for saving money and was beaten when he tried to resist
The company’s main business is to provide a wide range of products and services to the public. At that Time, from a distance, I thought the old man was not feeling well. Only when she got closer did she find the old man leaning against the wall with his head broken and bleeding, surrounded by many people.
According to those who were present, Tracy learned that the party and the robbers passed by, and the robbers in the car were wearing masks, so it was impossible to see whether they were carrying firearms. But the details of the case, Tracy relayed the eyewitness account, and the police account of the discrepancy. Witnesses said the elder went to the bank to withdraw nearly $20,000 in cash, and just after leaving the bank door, he was targeted by several robbers and held him dead on the ground, snatching the cash. The elderly man tried to resist and was beaten and bled by the robbers.
Tracy said police officers and an ambulance arrived soon after. The police station interviewed witnesses, but it appears that only the bank security guard saw the entire robbery and took a statement. Everyone else saw parts of the process.
Tracy said that during the police statement, the Chinese elder spoke a few words of English, although not fluent enough. At one point, he also used Cantonese to communicate with a bank employee. Witnesses said the elder was the owner of a grocery store in downtown St. Leavenworth. But the reporter could not confirm his identity.
Tracy speculated that perhaps it was because the Lunar New Year had arrived and the Chinese had gone to the bank to get cash to seal their profits that they were targeted by the suspects. The robbers are now of other ethnicities, but are smart enough to know that Chinese people have the habit of withdrawing or depositing cash during the Chinese New Year. The robbers may have been in front of the bank for a long time. Maybe they saw that the old man was not strong enough to do it. There are Asian or Chinese people being pushed and attacked in San Francisco and in Yalun, and many crimes are entirely against Asians.
Woman witnessed robbery scared to receive money
Tracy said the incident happened next to the Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank, she often come here to withdraw money or do other things, this is the first time the scene witnessed such a vicious robbery. She was so scared that she didn’t take the money and left. She took several videos at the scene and posted them in her WeChat circle of friends, hoping to remind Chinese people to pay attention to safety when they go to the bank to deposit and withdraw money, and that it is better to ask a young person to accompany them and pay attention to the surrounding environment.
Tracy also hopes to use the video to remind the Chinese to unite as one, witnessed the robbery, bravely stand up and speak out, to put pressure on the government, to protect the community security.
