U.S. media outlet Breitbart News reported Tuesday (Feb. 9) that Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-Calif.), chairwoman of the House Oversight Committee, wrote to Parler Chief Operating Officer Jeffrey Wernick (D-N.Y.) on Monday asking the social media platform to reveal its investors and creditors.
In his letter, Maloney said, “In the weeks leading up to the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, Parler users actively used the platform to call for violence and even civil war. Since the attack, many Parler users have been arrested and charged for the onslaught on the Capitol.”
Breitbart News said protesters had also used other social media platforms (such as Facebook, Twitter and the oil pipe) to organize and discuss plans for Jan. 6 before the Capitol Hill riots, according to an FBI affidavit. A criminal indictment filed Wednesday (Feb. 9) revealed that a search warrant was issued for the protesters’ Facebook accounts because of mounting evidence that people were using Facebook to organize protests. The U.S. Department of Justice has also filed several charges against people who used Facebook to plan and participate in the D.C. protests.
Even so, Maloney decided to take a shot at Parler. In his letter, Maloney continued, “Individuals with ties to the January 6 attacks should not, and must not, hide behind shell companies to hold Parler.”
Maloney also mentioned that “according to a recent news report, Parler offered President Trump 40 percent ownership in exchange for Trump’s inclusion, but negotiations were ultimately suspended due to the Jan. 6 incident on Capitol Hill.”
In her letter, the congresswoman asked Parler to produce the following documents.
- capitalization forms showing the individuals and entities with direct or indirect ownership interests in Parler
- a list of all individuals and entities that own or have any control over Parler
- A list of Parler’s creditors who hold at least $10,000 in debt
- all agreements, including but not limited to consulting, service or business agreements, entered into by Parler with any Russian person or entity
- any financing and investments made by any Russian person or entity, directly or indirectly, in Parler, and their related documents
- all documents and communications relating to the offer of ownership of Parler to President Trump
Last month, Maloney asked the FBI to investigate Parler, claiming that Parler may have played a role in the Capitol Hill riots and that she is a pro at fighting Parler.
