The senior leader of the Oath Keepers, accused of being a rebel, is actually a former Navy commander and former senior FBI official who had access to top secrets 40 years ago, the U.S. media National Archives reported Tuesday (Feb. 9).
According to a motion filed Monday by attorney Thomas Plofchan, Thomas Edward Caldwell was “vetted and repeatedly found to be a person worthy of the trust of the U.S. government, as evidenced by the fact that he was granted top-secret clearance. “
The New York Post reports that Prochain has informed prosecutors that Caldwell “retired from the Navy as a lieutenant and served as the head of the FBI unit from 2009 to 2010.” According to Plochan, Caldwell’s highest security clearance level dates back to 1979.
Caldwell has been described by prosecutors as a senior leader of the Oath Keepers organization. Oath Keepers is purported to be a far-right militia movement, but in reality the group recruits heavily from the military and law enforcement, often espousing neoliberal talking points while actively confronting right-wing Trump supporters at public political events.
