Japanese media: TSMC will establish an R&D facility in Japan

TSMC will set up an R&D facility in Japan.

Taiwan-based semiconductor manufacturing company TSMC plans to set up its first official R&D facility in Japan and is currently in the process of finalizing coordination for an investment of about 20 billion yen (US$190.1 million), the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported on Feb. 8.

According to the report, the R&D facility is planned to be built in Tsukuba City, Ibaraki Prefecture, and will be involved in semiconductor packaging development and testing, while TSMC is also considering setting up production lines in Japan.

According to the report, TSMC will hold a board meeting in the near future and release it in the near future at the earliest.

Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry regards semiconductors as a strategic area and also has the intention of supporting TSMC, a world leader in the field, to strengthen cooperation with Japanese companies through subsidies and other means.

TSMC has already promoted cooperation with Japanese companies in Taiwan, but to accelerate the development of cutting-edge semiconductors and further deepen the relationship, TSMC’s presence in Japan has become an indispensable link.

According to the report, TSMC is currently accelerating the construction of its first overseas cutting-edge semiconductor plant in the U.S. With the establishment of a cutting-edge technology R&D facility in Japan, TSMC can take advantage of Japan, the U.S. and Taiwan to continue to maintain its dominant position as the world’s largest semiconductor foundry.
