Sen. Lindsey Graham, a South Carolina Republican, said Monday (Feb. 8) that the Biden administration should look at the foreign policies set by the Trump administration and “keep them if they make sense.”
In a recent interview, Graham called on Biden to slow down politically and warned that reversing all of the Trump Administration‘s foreign policies would be harmful to the country.
The senator said:I want to remind President Biden …… because just because Trump is doing it doesn’t mean it’s wrong.” “So if I were President Biden, I would slow down, reevaluate some of Trump’s policies, and if they make sense, go ahead with them.”
Meanwhile, Biden recently announced that the U.S. will withdraw from the war in Yemen. The Trump administration had invested heavily in that war to support the Saudi-led coalition fighting Iran-linked rebels.
On Afghanistan, Graham said he supports the Biden Administration‘s plan to keep troops in the country as long as they are necessary. However, he warned Biden against lifting sanctions on Iran.
“I think Iran is weaker today than it has ever been since the regime was established some 40 years ago,” the senator said. “So, if I were President Biden, I would continue to impose sanctions on Iran until Iran changes its ways. I don’t want to make the old deal with Iran because they’ve been doing bad things for too long.”
Former President Trump got the U.S. out of the Iran nuclear deal and imposed severe sanctions on the Middle Eastern country. In addition, the Trump administration helped broker the historic Abrahamic Agreement, which normalized relations between Israel and the United Arab Emirates.
Within his first few weeks in office, Biden signed a series of executive orders that sought to directly undo the political legacy of the previous administration. Many Republican lawmakers expect that these actions will bring bad results for the country.
