People have taken to the streets in many parts of Myanmar for days to protest the military’s coup last week to seize power. The State Management Committee, led by Defense Force Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing, announced Monday (8) a curfew on Yangon, the country’s largest city, and Mandalay, the second largest city, and banned more than five people from attending rallies.
According to the curfew, people in Yangon and Mandalay are not allowed to go out from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. on Monday, while the southern city of Meg (Myeik) is under curfew from 9 p.m. to 3 a.m., and more cities are expected to implement similar measures. In addition, the military also limited the number of rallies and banned demonstrations against the military government.
Min Aung Hlaing made a nationally televised address on Monday, the first since the military staged the coup. He called on the public to prioritize the right facts over emotions, reiterated that there were irregularities in the elections held last November, and stressed that the military will hold elections and transfer power to the winning party.
