The outbreak of an unknown disease in Ifumbo District, Mbeya Province, southwestern Tanzania, has so far claimed more than 10 lives and left more than 50 people hospitalized for treatment. The Ministry of health has ordered an investigation and urged the public to remain calm.
The disease, which causes patients to vomit blood, has been sampled and tested twice by regional medical institutions, but no clear diagnosis has been made. Mpyila, the district councillor of Ifembo district, said at the councillor’s cabinet meeting that the mysterious disease appeared tens of days ago and showed signs of spreading, calling on the central government to step in.
The health chief of Mbeya province noted that some of the patients had experienced stomach pains, vomiting and fever as early as 2018. The health ministry ordered the medical team in Mbeya province to submit a written report on the specifics, while appealing to the nation to calm down and more information will be released after the investigation.
