Germany was originally a major beer producing and consuming country, but the New Crown Epidemic has greatly affected beer sales. Beer consumption has hit a record low. The Federation of German Brewers says Germany has fallen into a serious situation.
Germans drank 500 million liters less beer in 2020, according to the German weekly magazine Der Spiegel. According to the German Federal Statistical Office, 8.7 billion liters of beer were sold in Germany in 2020, down 5.5 percent from the previous year, meaning that Germans drank 508.2 million liters less beer. The Federation of German Brewers said the situation for German breweries is dire, the worst situation since World War II.
According to the federation’s poll, the beer industry’s sales fell by an average of 23 percent in 2020.
Last year, due to the new crown epidemic, the German government mandated that the restaurant industry must close for many months. Various cultural and sports events were also banned, which, together with the paralysis of some important foreign markets, hit the beer industry hard. Breweries lost a large part of their economic base in a single day as the city closure collapsed the draft beer market. Millions of dollars’ worth of merchandise had to be destroyed. The larger the brewery’s catering and cultural and sporting event operations, the more severe the financial losses. Some companies that sold beer primarily in retail stores weathered the crisis relatively well. But other companies complained that sales had plummeted and often jeopardized survival. In individual cases, sales declines could be as high as 70 percent.
Breweries complained that government assistance was inadequate. Overall, the situation for restaurant employees was also bad. For most people, the city closure means Life is getting harder. After the second closure last winter, they were only able to earn short-term wages, which amounted to 60-67 percent of their last normal working wage.
The Hamburger Morgenpost reports that the new crown crisis has brought a beer crisis. For example, a brewer in northern Germany had to destroy 2,500 barrels of draft beer, totaling 10 liters of senatorial beer, because the beer’s expiration date had passed, due to declining sales.
