Police issue ‘missing child alert’. (California Highway Patrol)
A shocking child abduction case was reported in San Francisco on Saturday evening, February 6. In a carjacking and robbery, two Chinese-American children were driven away directly by the suspect because they were sitting in the car. Bay Area law enforcement sent out an Amber Alert to the entire population, sparking a social media firestorm and a citywide police search for them.
About four hours later, at about 1 a.m. midnight, police found the two children. The children were found unharmed and safely returned to their Chinese father. No arrests have been made.
The crime occurred around 9 p.m. Saturday. Jeffery Fang, the father of the two children, was driving in Pacific Heights, an affluent neighborhood in San Francisco, delivering Food with the two children in his car. When Jeffery Fang got out of his car to deliver the food, he did not pull out the car keys, but only hit the lights. About a minute after the meal was delivered, Fang came back and saw someone sitting in his car, he immediately went forward to stop them, but during the struggle, he was robbed of his cell phone.
In an emergency, Fang Shaoyu immediately rushed to grab back the phone, the results turned around and found that his vehicle had been driven away. Inside the car were his two young children, his four-year-old daughter, Winnifred Fang, and his one-year-old son, Sean Fang. The two children spoke little to no English and only Mandarin.
After the crime, Fang Shaoyu was interviewed by a TV station with a crying voice hoping the robbers would not hurt her children, which instantly caused a city-wide debate. Near about 11:00 p.m., police and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) jointly issued a “Missing Child Alert,” which was received by most people in the Bay Area on their cell phones.
The car from which Fang Shaoyu was taken was a silver-gray Honda Odyssey with a license plate number attached. People on Bay Area social media shared the incident in large numbers to find the vehicle involved as soon as possible. People from the Chinese community also shared and retweeted on Facebook and WeChat.
It was not until 1 a.m. that police found the vehicle in the Bayview area of San Francisco, and the two children were found safely and were reportedly not seriously injured. The police have not released any information about the suspects or the arrests at this Time. The “missing child alert” was then lifted.
After the children were found, Fang Shaoyu said in an interview that he and his wife were in a “nightmare” as they waited for news of their children, and that every second felt like years. I’m very happy that the children were found,” Fong said, thanking everyone for their support on social media.
Fang is well known in the San Francisco community, having served as a student trustee at San Francisco City College, and is known directly to many English and Chinese journalists. The San Francisco Examiner has also featured the story of his wife and children who immigrated to the United States. His wife, Xu Zhenzhen, and three children officially immigrated from China to the U.S. at the beginning of the outbreak last March.
A Gofundme online fundraising campaign has been set up to assist Fang Shaoyu. As of noon Sunday, Feb. 7, donations had exceeded $50,000.
