AIT: U.S. encourages more countries to deepen unofficial ties with Taiwan

After Guyana’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on February 4 the termination of its agreement to establish an office with Taiwan, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) said on February 6 that the U.S. encourages more countries to deepen their unofficial relations with Taiwan and also looks forward to working closely with Taiwan in the region.

According to Taiwan’s Central News Agency, AIT spokesperson Amanda Mansour noted through a statement that the U.S. encourages Guyana and Taiwan to continue to strengthen their strong partnership. The U.S. support for Taiwan is “rock solid. Taiwan is a friend to the world through a partnership that promotes security, democratic values, and prosperity based on principles of mutual respect and transparency. The U.S. encourages more countries to deepen their unofficial ties with Taiwan.

Taiwan is a democratic leader, a thriving economic partner, a technological powerhouse, and a shining example of an open society that can effectively curb the spread of Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), said Meng. The United States looks forward to working closely with Taiwan in the region to strengthen democracy and economic growth.
