Guatemala signed an asylum agreement with former U.S. President Donald Trump in 2019 to send asylum seekers at the U.S.-Mexico border to Central American countries pending hearings, while the Guatemala Ministry of Foreign Affairs said through a statement on the 5th of this month that the U.S. government has terminated the agreement, officially canceling the plan negotiated during Trump’s presidency.

Reuters reported that the agreement is the same as the one Trump signed with El Salvador and Honduras, forcing Central American countries to help the U.S. solve the immigration problem by sending asylum seekers who flock to the U.S. southern border to stay in those countries.
