A new U.S. poll shows that nearly two-thirds of Republican voters would join former President Donald Trump if he left the GOP to form a new party.
The Hill reports that the newspaper, working with polling firm HarrisX, interviewed 945 registered voters in the U.S. on Jan. 28-29, 340 of whom identified themselves as Republicans, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
The survey found that 64 percent of Republican voters said they would join a new party formed by Trump, with 32 percent saying they would likely do so; another 36 percent of Republican voters responded that they would be extremely unlikely or unlikely to join such a party.
Outside of Republican supporters, 28% and 15% of independent and Democratic voters, respectively, said they would likely switch to a Trump-led 3rd party. Overall, 37% of voters said they would likely join a new party if Trump were to form one. Trump floated the idea of forming a new political party in January, but there are no concrete plans yet.
Dritan Nesho, executive director of HarrisX, said these data show that despite the riots on Capitol Hill, Trump is still a political force to be reckoned with, and if Trump splits from the Republican Party and creates his own party, polls show Trump is likely to create the 2nd largest party in the U.S., dropping the Republican Party to 3rd place.
