A new poll released by The Hill and Hill-HarrisX shows that a majority of Republican voters say they would join a new political party if former President Trump formed his own.
The Hill reports that 64 percent of Republican voters in the Jan. 28-29 survey said they would join a new party formed by Trump, with 32 percent saying they would be very likely to do so. Another 36 percent of Republican voters responded that they were either very unlikely to join or unlikely to do so.
The survey found that 28% of unaffiliated voters and 15% of Democratic voters said they would likely join a 3rd party headed by Trump.
Overall, 37% of voters said they would likely join a new Trump-led party if he formed his own.
Last month, it was reported that Trump had floated the idea of forming a new party, but no specific plans for a Trump-led 3rd party were mentioned.
Dritan Nesho, CEO and chief pollster at Harris Poll, said, “These numbers show that despite the congressional riots, Trump is a political force to be reckoned with. He benefits from a diverse base of support that constitutes more than one-third of the electorate and is attracted by the belief that he can tackle many issues that have not been properly addressed by the Democratic and Republican elites,” he said.
If Trump leaves the party to form his own party, polls show that he is likely to form the 2nd largest party in the U.S. and squeeze the Republicans into the 3rd largest party slot,” he said.
The Capitol Hill newspaper and Harris Poll conducted the survey online among 945 registered voters, 340 of whom identified themselves as Republicans, with a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
