China defends Tatmadaw coup, leading to a surge in xenophobia Chinese community publicly condemns Chinese government to show cut

The coup staged by the Burmese military has created a climate of instability in the society, with pro-government supporters generally complaining about China’s performance in shielding the Burmese military and even escalating xenophobic sentiments. Dozens of local Chinese organizations, fearing a repeat of the bloody Chinese exclusion, have issued statements condemning the Chinese government for condoning the coup and demanding that the Burmese military release Aung San Suu Kyi.

At a Time when the Burmese people are in dire straits, the Chinese representative to the United Nations defended the Burmese military for staging the coup and tried to prevent the Security Council from condemning it, sparking a fierce public backlash after the news spread in Myanmar on Thursday night. Fierce criticism of the Chinese government quickly emerged on social media, and quickly spread to target Chinese in Myanmar, with abuse and attacks on ethnic Chinese.

Hundreds of thousands of Chinese in Burma were immediately thrown into a huge panic. This panic and concern even spread to areas controlled by ethnic armed groups in northern Burma, which have strong ties with China, and sparked discontent among the local population against the Chinese government. Dozens of Chinese organizations, including those called the Kokang Sensitive Nation in Shan State, issued a statement on Thursday evening in the name of all Burmese Chinese, saying they would stand on the side of justice and live and die together with the Burmese people.

Mr. Chen, a Burmese Chinese who is in Yangon, told our correspondent that after the disclosure of China’s official attitude, the anti-Chinese sentiment in Burmese society is indeed heating up rapidly. They are all very worried now, but because they have nowhere to hide, they can only stay at Home and watch the direction of the situation with fear and trepidation.

Mr. Chen said, “The crisis is still brewing, and we don’t know what will happen. How things are going to develop, no one can predict, right now. If something happens, the local Chinese are the “culprits”, because of this, we are now living in fear.

The Chinese business leader, who requested anonymity, believes that China’s performance in the Security Council has led directly to the hatred of Chinese businesses in Myanmar.

He said: “China voted against the motion this time, and the Chinese people in China have been stirred up in a big way, and there is still a serious sentiment of Chinese exclusion. In the morning, because our lawyers in Myanmar also came over to talk about it, there is still a little serious. The first victim is our private enterprises. Including the Western sanctions, these enterprises basically have to close down.

And a pro-China Burmese Chinese also admitted that feeling the danger and pressure, the only thing they can do now is to hide at home and not go out.

Mr. Xiang said: China is doing things in its interest to see the problem, ah, I can not say clearly, this thing is not easy to say. It is useless to worry, we are all staying at home.

A statement issued by dozens of Chinese organizations pointed out that the official Chinese approach could provoke a wave of Chinese exclusion in Burma, and emphasized that in the 1960s and 1970s, the export of revolutionary support to the Communist Party of Burma by the Chinese Communist Party had led to large-scale Chinese exclusion and the killing of countless Chinese, therefore, the Chinese in Burma condemned the Chinese government’s support for the Burmese military coup and joined the entire Burmese people in supporting the state capital Aung San Suu Kyi and democratically elected President U Win Myint.

It is reported that after the public statement was released, Chinese officials also quickly applied pressure to delete the content, including a Twitter account called “Shan State Kokang Nation”. Pro-Chinese media outlets also unanimously relayed the message, saying that the Chinese community’s condemnation of the Chinese government’s support for the Tatmadaw would further irritate the Burmese population and lead to more serious consequences.

But these self-publishers, who released the news at the behest of the Chinese side, also emphasized in their articles that it would be difficult for their ancestral country (China) to effectively protect the Chinese in the event of a tragedy.

The Chinese Embassy in Burma did not respond to interview requests, and several of the agency’s phone numbers were unavailable.

In recent years, the Chinese government has once again exported authoritarian politics around the world, and large numbers of Chinese businesspeople and even Chinese are once again being drawn into the official Chinese narrative, which is increasingly provoking a backlash from the people of the countries where it operates.

But whether from the New Crown Epidemic or regional crises, local Chinese and even Chinese citizens have been unable to get help from the Chinese government when in danger, and millions of Chinese citizens have even been forcibly blocked from returning to their home countries during the epidemic crisis.
