Jia Pingwa is not only a famous writer in today’s literary world, but also a popular figure in the world of calligraphy and painting. Jia also praised his father’s writing as “not tricky, not ingratiating, not flattering,” and his calligraphy and painting as “simple, atmospheric, genuine and less contrived,” among other things.

Some sources say that Jia Pingwa’s enthusiasm for “calligraphy creation” has led to a crowded doorstep of calligraphers, far exceeding that of professional calligraphers. In Xi’an, Jia Pingwa’s calligraphy is said to cost up to 100,000 yuan a piece.
According to public information, Jia Pingwa is the vice chairman of the Chinese Writers’ Association, and many of his novels have been selected as school textbooks. Jia’s daughter, Jia Shallow, is currently an associate professor at Northwestern University’s College of Literature and vice president of the Shaanxi Provincial Youth Literature Association. She has published three volumes of poetry and was selected as one of the “2019 Hall of Fame Top 10 Poets of the Year.
