Tao (a pseudonym) is a podcaster on the website Oil Tube (YouTube). Tao, 28, lives in the eastern United States and works as an engineer. A month or so ago, he started his channel “Wall Country Anti-Thief” on YouTube and began posting videos and programs that refute Chinese Communist propaganda and advocate the idea of freedom and democracy, and has gained more than He has gained more than 6,000 subscribers. Recently, this reporter interviewed him and listened to his story about his journey as a “post-90s” person on the road to fight against the Chinese Communist Party, and his channel He also talked about the operation of his channel “Wall Country Anti-Traitors”. Here is the interview with Tao by reporter Sun Cheng.
Reporter: Hello. As a “post-90s” person, how did you start to oppose the Chinese Communist Party and why did you start How did you start to oppose the Chinese Communist Party and why did you start a channel like “Wall Country Anti-Traitors”?
Tao: Hello, thank you for this question. Actually, because we all grew up in mainland China, and the brainwashing in China, as you know, is very powerful, and we all grew up under the Education of loving the Party and loving the country. There are many people who have embarked on the so-called “anti-traitor” path, that is, the path of pursuing democracy and freedom and disliking the Communist Party, and there is a process. Many people grew up as little pinkos, war wolves, and self-starters. But I have not had such a process myself. I have been opposed to the Communist Party since I was a child. And I think that many of the things that the Communist Party brainwashed are, in my personal opinion, very problematic in terms of logic. So at a very young age, I could probably tell what was wrong with it. So from this point on, I had this “anti-traitor” “gene” from a relatively young age. “gene”, or “born with a rebellious bone “I was born with a backbone. But before, I actually did not want to do such a channel. I was in college in 2012 or 2013, and my thought at that Time was “OK, fine, I just need to emigrate to a modern civilized country and live my Life well. “. At that time, it happened that my Family did some immigration things, and then the immigration was successful, so I immigrated to the United States with my family. So that was my thought at that time, that I wanted to be able to emigrate to a foreign country and then not get involved in politics. I knew inside myself that the Communist Party was bad and that the democratic and free system was good, but I just wanted to live my own life, that’s what I thought at the beginning.
Tao: One very important thing that broke this idea of mine was the new crown pneumonia last year, which changed my mind to a great extent. Because I found that even if I was in the United States, I could not escape some of the effects of the Chinese Communist dictatorship on me. The first is that the CCP initially concealed the Epidemic, resulting in an epidemic in China that was not officially allowed to be reported until long after it had occurred. The second is that the Chinese Communist Party bribed officials of the World health Organization (WHO), especially WHO Secretary General Tan Desai, to cause the international community to initially be unaware of the epidemic, which eventually led to the spread of the epidemic around the world. After the epidemic spread to the U.S., my job, my salary was affected, and many things in various areas would actually be affected. And in this process, I have seen many people in China who will work hard to change China, like Chen Qiushi and Fang Bin, like Zhang Zhan who was just sentenced some time ago, and Li Zehua. These people seem to me to be very brave to do such things inside the wall, regardless of their own safety, to try to find ways to bring down the wall. However, they all “went in” one by one. I felt that since I was outside the wall, my freedom would be much higher than theirs, and my personal safety would be guaranteed. I feel that as a childhood “rebel”, my own life will be affected by the totalitarian rule of the Communist Party. Moreover, since the beginning of the anti-sending in Hong Kong in 2018 and 2019, and especially since the beginning of the Wuhan epidemic in 2020, I think the international community has now reached a consensus against the totalitarian system in China. So, I also hope to do some of my own efforts in this, to do some of my own contribution to resist the totalitarian tyranny, to pursue democracy and freedom, and to bring down this wall. So that’s the direct reason why I made the channel.
Tao: It can be considered as a trigger, I noticed the Taiwanese channel “Diary of a Regent” in September 2020. It is a channel. The characteristics of the channel are that it is very diverse, and it has its own views, some of which are about Taiwan and some are about China. Diary of a Regent” has invited Pinky to be on the show to do something more entertaining. They also invite Chinese people with universal values to come on the show, so that Chinese people who don’t have a voice can have a voice on their channel. So, in October, I got up the courage to send an email to “Diary of a Regent” and said “I am a Chinese with universal values, and I want to be on the show to speak my mind”. So, a few days later, Bajiong of “Diary of a Regent” emailed me back (press: Bajiong is “The interview was then recorded for 30 minutes, and then he cut it into two videos, which I thought were quite good. After the videos were sent out, I saw that the comments at the bottom were quite good. A lot of Taiwanese people said that they would follow me if I ever opened a channel. So that actually encouraged me and made me think that my own eloquence and my knowledge of China might be suitable for a channel. And it might actually be something that people would watch. So I bought a new computer and equipment, including my recording equipment, in late December, and then I sent out my first video on December 24th.
Reporter: Do you think your channel can change the public opinion environment in China, where the control of public opinion is getting worse and worse?
Tao: I’ll be honest, I don’t think I can change much, for very simple reasons. The first reason is that, as you mentioned, the control of speech in China is getting tighter and tighter, and Chinese young people are growing up under such education and becoming more and more “50 cents”. So, I think this is the first reason, the general environment. The second point is that the Wuhan epidemic last year, I think, gave the CCP and its supporters a mouthful, that the CCP was “well controlled”. There is only one voice in China, they say they have “good control” and everyone believes it, and many Chinese people really believe that. The third and biggest difficulty is that there is a “Great Firewall of Internet” that prevents most young Chinese people from seeing my channel inside China. Most of the people who see my channel are probably those who have universal values and democratic and liberal values, while those who are “50 cents” will not see the channel. So to be honest, I’m not very optimistic about this. I can only say that I just want to do my part. I think, to make such a channel, I try to do a good job, tell it well, and try to make the logic of each thing as flawless as possible. If I can do that, I think I’ve at least made my contribution. But if we talk about the results, to be honest, I am not particularly optimistic.
Reporter: What is the content of the programs on your channel?
Tao: I haven’t been doing my channel for a long time, but I mainly do several parts. For example, my first video is about some “shameless (behavior)” of the Chinese Communist government in 2020. For example, my first video is about some “shameless (behavior)” of the Chinese Communist government in 2020. The second type is that I will track some current events and talk about some significant current news, such as the former U.S. Secretary of State Pompeo declaring what the Chinese Communist Party did in Xinjiang as genocide and Crimes Against Humanity, (also) including the previous Chinese “B Station (also) the starvation death of Chinese “B-station” podcaster “Mocha” (press: b (also) the starvation death of “Mocha”, a podcaster on the Chinese “B” station (B-site, the Chinese video site “Beili Beili”). The third point is that I will talk about some commentary, for example, I have talked about the backwardness of China’s rural areas, and some of the more barbaric, “jungle society “I’m going to post some videos. Next I’m going to post some videos, for example, about forced demolitions in China, petitions in China, that is, about some of the more barbaric, backward and darker things that have been happening in China for ten or twenty years. I may speak about these things based on some hot topics or themes. Fourthly, I am in the United States, so I will do some location shooting and some actual shooting. Two days ago, I did some actual shooting at Costco supermarket in the United States, shooting the prices of this place. This is a very realistic shooting, I did not do a lot of editing. There are some things, such as stationery, I also said “this stuff is very expensive”. But some things, such as Food, for example, meat, eggs, milk is very cheap, I have it all realistic filming. So, it is to do some more realistic shooting. These are a few of the types I’ve done so far.
Tao: After that, what I especially hope to do is, when my attention and subscriptions reach a relatively high status, I may not chase hot spots every day, I may do some series of programs, for example, I will talk about the history of June 4, the Cultural Revolution, the Great Famine. In such a case, I may do a series of programs, for example, 20 or 30, each program is not long, for example, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, at most 20 minutes. These programs may not bring a lot of traffic after I just speak. If the program is put on the Internet, if I really do a good job, for example, if I quote the historical material is very true and I speak very well, it may be in a month, two months, six months, then twelve months, then two years, three years, five years, or even ten years later, people will keep searching and reading related things. I think that this is one of my future goals. Of course, I will track some current events in the future, and I may make a prediction about the situation in China. We all want to bring down this wall, we all want this totalitarian system to end immediately. The end of the system may not be achieved overnight. I may follow some current news, and I may do some of my own opinions on where I think the regime has gone and where it will go next, and I may do some of these programs. I myself will try to be more truthful. First of all, I will not whitewash the Communist Party, that’s for sure. Secondly, I will not shout meaningless slogans for the sake of “destroying the Communist Party”. I definitely want to talk about my real thoughts and feelings, as well as my experiences and understanding of what I have been living in China for more than 20 years.
Reporter: What kind of feedback has the channel “Wall Country Anti-Traitors” received since its launch?
Tao: Generally speaking, the viewers of my channel are Taiwanese and Hong Kong people, which is actually quite distinguishable, because they mainly type traditional Chinese characters, and their feedback is generally very good. Then, there are some people who stay in simplified characters, I guess they are Chinese, and their feedback is also mostly good. There are some people who are afraid to speak, and they think I can help them say something they are afraid to say. But there are also some Chinese people who will point out to me the problems with my channel, and I will look at them and accept the ones that make sense. Some do not make sense, I may ignore. I feel that a lot of people have actually started to pay attention to me now, and every video I make will have some rather boring little pink people coming over to me to “wash the version “Some are direct curses and insults. These abusive things will be blocked out by the oil pipe, not by me. Then there are those who use reasoning, which is actually nonsense, and I think these people should be fifty cents. Their words seem to be very coherent, but they are actually nonsense, covering up the facts, and ignoring the facts. Some people would say, “You’re not even in China anymore, so why do you care about China? Others will say, “You shouldn’t call the Communist Party names or say bad things about China if you use Chinese. I think if I’m not interested, I’ll block it. If I am interested, I will “top” their comments, so that people can see what kind of people these 50 cents and pinkies are.
