CCP’s central media Global TV network’s broadcasting license revoked by UK authorities

Ofcom announced Thursday that it has cancelled China Global Television Network’s (CGTN) license to broadcast in the U.K. because the channel’s final news review authority is under the exclusive control of the Chinese Communist Party.

In a statement the same day, Ofcom said its investigation revealed that the license granted to CGTN was in the hands of an entity that had no editorial control over its own programming. Ofcom could not approve the licensing of China Universal Television Network because its ultimate control is in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party, which is not permitted under U.K. broadcasting regulations.

Global TV, formerly affiliated with China Central Television, has reportedly faced long-standing complaints in the U.K. for, among other things, conducting explicit political propaganda and broadcasting television confessions involving British citizens in China. The network is also one of seven Chinese news organizations identified by the U.S. government as “foreign government agents.
