The Canadian government announced today that Hong Kong graduates with degrees from universities in the country will be able to apply for a new three-year work permit starting next week, in light of China’s intensifying crackdown on Hong Kong people.
Reuters reported that under the new visa rules, any Hong Kong resident who has graduated from a Canadian university within the past five years can apply for a work permit for up to three years.
Canada continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with the people of Hong Kong and is deeply concerned about the new National Security Act and the deteriorating human rights situation,” the Canadian government said in a statement.
Immediately following the enactment of Hong Kong’s National Security Act, Canada took action to suspend its extradition treaty with Hong Kong and to ban the export of sensitive military items.
Hong Kong residents temporarily residing in Canada, including visitors, students and workers, are now able to apply for visas through the Internet. Eligible spouses or common-law partners and dependent children can also apply for study or work permits.
