Chinese human rights activist Guo Feixiong was on a flight to the United States to take care of his wife, who is seriously ill with cancer, but was intercepted by the Chinese Communist Party authorities and lost. According to foreign media, more than 20 Chinese intellectuals yesterday sent an open letter to the three leaders of the Chinese Communist Party, including Xi Jinping, Li Keqiang and Li Zhanshu, urging them to release him as soon as possible.
According to the Voice of America, the open letter, signed by more than 20 senior Chinese intellectuals, including a professor at Tsinghua University and a prominent lawyer, said, “Guo Feixiong has long been committed to promoting China’s social progress and has been devoted to academic research since his release from prison in August 2019, offering many insights into China’s institutional improvement and peaceful transformation.
The open letter points out that Guo has been on a hunger strike for more than five days because he was prevented from leaving the country, and his Life and death are unknown.
According to the Voice of America, the open letter is another rare citizen’s action initiated by intellectuals in China since the death of the late Wuhan physician Li Wenliang, the whistle blower of New Guan Pneumonia, in February last year.
