Pompeo: Undersecretary Crunch to lead delegation in economic dialogue with Taiwan

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo announced on Tuesday (Nov. 10) that Deputy Secretary of State John Klatsch will lead a U.S. delegation to hold an Economic Prosperity Partners Dialogue with Taiwan on Nov. 20.

At a press conference at the State Department, Pompeo said, “This dialogue demonstrates the strong and growing economic relationship we have with Taiwan, which has a vibrant democracy and is a reliable partner to us.”

The dialogue was held in the United States and hosted by the American Institute in Taiwan and the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States, Pompeo said.

Taiwan’s representative to the U.S., Hsiao Mei-chin, on Tuesday “welcomed” Pompeo’s announcement. She said the Taiwanese side was led by Economic Affairs Undersecretary Chen Zheng-Qi.

She also said the dialogue will be conducted through a physical and video link, with the physical part taking place in Washington, D.C., in light of the epidemic.

In response to a question raised by Taiwanese media about the sustainability of the U.S. economic dialogue between the U.S. and Taiwan, such as the rotation of political parties, Xiao Meiqin replied, “5G, supply chain, public health and other areas of cooperation are cross-party concerns.”

Under Secretary of State for Economic Growth Affairs, Energy and the Environment Klatsch is currently visiting South America. He visited Taiwan in September and met with President Tsai Ing-wen, the highest-ranking U.S. State Department official to visit Taiwan since 1979.
