The gun industry has been hit since U.S. President Joe Biden took office. The picture is Biden’s file photo.
A gun expert said the latest background survey data released in January shows Americans are buying guns at a “rapid pace.
“This is undoubtedly related to President Joe Biden’s plan to crack down on the gun industry by rolling back and rewriting regulations and taking administrative action against the gun industry.” Mark Olivia, director of public affairs for the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), said in a statement.
Olivia noted that the Biden Administration has frozen the “fair access” banking rules issued by the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency and promised to repeal the Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act. The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) National Instant Criminal Background Check (NCIS) data, 4.3 million firearm background checks were initiated in January. This is the highest number ever, an increase of more than 300,000 compared to December 2020. Three of the top 10 weeks of the highest number of its kind are currently in January 2021.
The NSSF’s adjusted background check figure of 2 million is a jump from the adjusted figure of 1.1 million in January 2020.
“The numbers are eye-popping at the start of the New Year. Americans are seeking their Second Amendment rights in record numbers to provide for their own safety.” Olivia said.
“With the turmoil caused by the confirmation and inauguration of Mr. Biden as the new president of the United States, the new year’s (gun) sales are sure to be ‘a good one,'” Jurgen Brauer, chief economist at Small Arms Analytics, said in a statement. (gun) sales are sure to start with a ‘bang.'”
“However, the 79 percent year-over-year increase is not unprecedented. growth was even higher in January 2013, the month Obama’s second presidential term began, with a rise of more than 100 percent.” He added.
“Everytown for Gun Safety says the continued increase in background checks underscores the need for Congress and Biden to enforce gun restrictions.
“As the country recovers from multiple crises, the gun industry has seen record sales that have made Americans less safe.” Nick Suplina, the organization’s managing director of law and policy, said in a statement.
“The devastating gun violence Epidemic we already have could become even more deadly if policy changes are not made quickly.”
