Hong Kong Police Commissioner Tang Ping-keung confirmed at a press conference on Tuesday that the police have arrested 97 people since the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong for more than six months, eight of whom have been prosecuted.
Deng Bingqiang said the arrested people suspected of charges related to secession, subversion of state power, terrorist activities, collusion with foreign forces, with money or other financial support others to split the country; some people involved in the publication of seditious words, fraud, money laundering and other charges. Among the eight persons charged, “a major shareholder of a media group” was arrested and charged with collusion with foreign powers. Another 55 people have been arrested on suspicion of subversion of state power, and the cases are under investigation.
It is reported that Deng Bingqiang referred to “a major shareholder of the media group” for the founder of Next Media Lai Chi-ying. The arrest of more than 50 people who participated in last year’s democratic primary election by the Hong Kong State Crime Division last month opened the first Time since the implementation of the National Security Law in Hong Kong that the charge of “subversion of state power” was invoked.
Deng also warned that the Hong Kong police are “actively searching for evidence” to arrest or prosecute people suspected of violating the national security law, and “strictly prevent the resurgence of illegal activities.
