Reuters: Chinese hackers used SolarWinds to hack U.S. government computers

The Reuters news agency reported on Tuesday (2), citing sources, that Chinese Hackers used SolarWinds software vulnerabilities to break into U.S. government computers last year.

Two sources broke the news, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) investigators recently found that Chinese hackers used SolarWinds software vulnerabilities last year to hack into U.S. government computers, and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s federal payroll agency National Financial Center (National Finance Center) also in the list of victim agencies.

The sources said it was impossible to determine how many U.S. government units were implicated, but feared that thousands of U.S. government employees had their confidential data stolen, and that the hackers used the same computer infrastructure and tools as the previous cyber espionage supported by the Chinese government.

SolarWinds responded that the company was aware of the hacking of its customers, but did not find any clear evidence of who was responsible for it? The hackers did not have access to the company’s internal systems, and the company fixed the software vulnerability in December of last year.

A spokesman for the U.S. Department of Agriculture acknowledged the data breach before press Time but declined to give details, while the FBI declined to comment.
