The two spoke about the two Canadian citizens detained by China, with Vice President He Jinli assuring that the United States would “continue to do everything” to secure their release.
He reportedly took the initiative to mention the issue during the call, which was appreciated by Trudeau and Canadian officials.
The White House said in a statement that “the vice president expressed a strong position of solidarity with Canada” regarding former Canadian diplomat Kang Mingkai and businessman Michael, who are still being held by China. The Canadian Prime Minister’s Office also issued a press release saying Trudeau thanked He Jinli for supporting the two men’s efforts to gain their freedom. Previously, Biden had also spoken with Trudeau on 22 January and agreed to cooperate on the matter.
Kang Mingkai and Michael were arrested in China in December 2018 and charged with espionage in June last year. Canada said their arrests were Chinese retaliation for Canada’s detention of Meng at the request of the United States, but China said the two were unrelated.
He Jinli called Canada’s prime minister and said he would do his best to secure the release of the two Canadian citizens detained by China.
