Amazon Founder and CEO Jeff Bezos
U.S. e-commerce leader Amazon (Amazon) founder and CEO Jeff Bezos (Jeff Bezos) today threw a shock bomb, he announced on the 2nd EST, will resign from the post of CEO, the third quarter from the network service system (AWS) CEO Jassy (Andy Jassy) to take over.
However, the news, which shocked Wall Street and the entire business community, did not seem to scare investors, as Amazon’s stock price closed up 1.11% that day to $3,380, without much change.
According to the “FOSS News Network” reported that Bezos will resign as the company’s chief executive in the third quarter of this year to serve as the executive chairman of the board of directors, Amazon did not disclose details of the personnel change date. After Bezos’ transition, Jesse, who has worked at Amazon since 1997, will become Amazon’s new chief executive. Jesse started as an employee in the marketing department and is now the company’s web services system executive. The department serves the U.S. government and military, as well as private companies, and is the lifeblood of the company’s revenue.
Bezos co-founded Amazon in 1994 with his ex-wife, Mackenzie Scott, and gradually turned the company from an online bookstore into an online retail giant that sells a wide range of products around the world, employing 1.3 million people and serving hundreds of millions of customers and businesses. In January last year, Amazon, led by Bezos, surpassed $1 trillion in market capitalization. According to the Bloomberg Billionaires list, Bezos is now the second richest person in the world, with a net worth of about $185 billion, behind only tesla CEO Elon Musk.
In an email to employees, Bezos said, “Amazonians, I am pleased to announce that I will be moving to the role of executive chairman of Amazon’s board of directors in the third quarter, and Andy Jassy will become executive chairman. Andy Jassy will serve as chief executive officer. After moving on to become executive director, I intend to focus on developing new products and ideas that have not yet been perfected,” and “Andy, whom everyone in the company knows and who has been at Amazon for almost as long as I have, will be an outstanding leader and I have full confidence in him.
The announcement came as Amazon reported financial results for 2020, with record quarterly sales, thanks to a surge in online holiday shopping during the outbreak.
Recently, Amazon.com has been embroiled in controversy over its crackdown on the pro-conservative social media outlet Parler. Following the Jan. 6 protester break-in at the Capitol, Amazon announced it was discontinuing its web hosting service for Parler, bringing the platform to a standstill. Parler subsequently filed a lawsuit demanding that Amazon restore its service, while accusing Amazon of monopoly for terminating it.
