Myanmar Defense Force Commander-in-Chief Min Aung Hlaing launched a military coup on Monday (1), information shows that One Media Lai Chi-ying conspired to invest in Myanmar in the early years, and is suspected to have presented a watch to Min Aung Hlaing through his crony Mark Simon to pull strings in exchange for investment opportunities.
The anonymous source, who goes by the pseudonym “One Media Shareholder,” broke the news in 2014 that Lai had frequent contacts with the Burmese political and business communities, including the military government and the opposition, including a four-day visit to Burma in mid-January 2013 accompanied by former U.S. Deputy Secretary of Defense Paul Wolfowitz. He met with officials from the Ministry of Transport, Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Commerce and Trade, and the Chairman of the Central Bank of Burma. On the Internet, pictures show Li Zhiying, Wolfowitz and Mark Simon with Min Aung Hlaing and a group of senior Burmese army officials.
“The latter sent an email to Mark Simon in June 2013, reminding him to give a watch to Min Aung Hlaing in exchange for doing business in the region.
The first Time was in July 2013, when he donated more than US$161,000 (HK$1.25 million), and another time in September of the same year, when he donated about US$145,000 (HK$1.13 million) to Burmese opposition figure Yuza Maw Htoon. According to information, Yuza Maw Htoon has participated in Myanmar’s national elections and is the founder of two local non-governmental organizations.
