Nearly 40% of Americans believe China and the U.S. will go to war within five years, and India’s rate is more than half as high.

Tensions between China and the U.S. are high, and YouGov, a British pollster, recently released the results of a global study on whether China and the U.S. will go to war within five years.

Nearly 40% of U.S. respondents believe China and the U.S. will go to war, while more respondents in China’s neighbors Japan and India share this view, up to 44% and 68% respectively.

The survey did not include data from Chinese respondents. In the U.S., 39 percent of respondents believe the U.S. would likely go to war with China, but the U.S. public is quite divided on the issue, with another 26 percent saying it is unlikely and 11 percent even saying it is very unlikely.

In the U.K., 38 percent of respondents believe the U.S. and China could go to war within five years, but about 40 percent also believe it is unlikely. The first four countries most in agreement with this view are Asian and African countries, respectively, South Africa, Indonesia, Nigeria and Thailand, the degree of agreement are more than 70%.
