Sun Yelie becomes vice minister of the Central Propaganda Department.
At the beginning of the new year, there is a personnel adjustment at the top of the Chinese Propaganda Department of the Communist Party. Sun Yelie, who has stepped down as vice president of the Central Institute of Party History and Documentation, has assumed the post of vice minister of the Propaganda Department.
According to the Chinese social science network, on January 28, the annual work conference of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences 2021 opened in Beijing. According to the news, Sun Yelie, vice minister of the Central Propaganda Department, was invited to attend the meeting. This is Sun Yelie’s first appearance in a new capacity.
In fact, as early as January 6, Sun Yelie, vice president of the Central Institute of Party History and Documentation, attended the National Propaganda Ministers’ Conference and took a seat at the podium between Jiang Jianguo and Zhang Jianchun, vice ministers of the Central Propaganda Department.
On January 9, the official website of the Central Institute of Party History and Documentation “leading members” column shows that Sun Yelie is no longer the vice president of the Central Institute of Party History and Documentation.
Sun, 57, a native of Anqiu, Shandong province, has been working in the Central Literature Research Office, serving as deputy secretary-general of the Central Literature Research Office and editor-in-chief of Party Literature, director of the fifth editorial and research department of the Central Literature Research Office, director of the sixth editorial and research department of the Central Literature Research Office, and deputy director of the Central Literature Research Office, etc. In March 2018, Sun became vice president of the Central Academy of Party History and Literature.
According to local media reports, Sun Yelie has participated in editing and writing propaganda articles such as Xi Jinping on Governance, Xi Jinping on Adhering to Comprehensively Deepening Reform, Xi Jinping on Adhering to and Promoting the Building of a Community of Human Destiny, Xi Jinping on One Belt and One Road, and excerpts from Xi Jinping’s series of important discourses, as well as Hu Jintao’s Selected Writings and Jiang Zemin on the Three Represents.
After Xi Jinping came to power, Sun Yelie edited the books “Excerpts from Xi Jinping’s Discourses on Achieving the Chinese Dream of Great Revival of the Chinese Nation”, “Excerpts from Xi Jinping’s Discourses on the Party’s Mass Line Education and Practice Activities” and “Excerpts from Xi Jinping’s Discourses on Comprehensively Deepening Reform”.
The Chinese Communist Party‘s official media commented that the three books reflect “some of Xi Jinping’s style of writing and speech” and contain “many of the innovative new ideas, new views and new assertions put forward by Xi Jinping”.
In the afternoon of June 24, 2019, the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China held its 15th collective study on “remembering the original mission and promoting self-revolution”. It was Sun Yelie who gave the lecture at that Time.
From his experience, Sun Yelie is highly appreciated by Xi Jinping for his advocacy of the CCP’s ideological propaganda. He is on a par with Wang Huning, Xi’s theoretical think tank and a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Political Bureau in charge of ideology and propaganda.
Wang Huning has assisted Jiang, Hu and Xi in three successive generations of Communist Party leaders and is known as the “chief think tank of Zhongnanhai”. According to some reports, Jiang Zemin’s “Three Represents”, Hu Jintao’s “Scientific Outlook on Development” and Xi Jinping’s “Chinese Dream” are all important statements made by Wang Huning.
According to U.S.-based political Writer Chen Bukong, as Xi’s theoretical architect, Wang Huning, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee in charge of ideology, is the brain of today’s CCP and the source of extreme leftist thinking, “Xi Jinping’s Marxism is actually Wang Huning’s Marxism; the so-called Xi Jinping Thought is actually Wang Huning Thought.
However, some Hong Kong media said that in the past period of time, the opposition to Wang Huning has been rising within the party. The old story of Wang Huning being a member of Jiang’s faction has been rehashed; in addition, some people within the CCP have recently been pointing the finger of blame at Wang Huning for Xi Jinping’s hard-line actions at Home and his international war-wolf line, and voices of blame have emerged one after another.
Last October, after the Fifth Plenary Session of the Communist Party of China, Wang Huning stepped down from his nearly 18-year post as director of the Central Policy Research Office. In response, some observers say that Wang Huning’s power has been restricted and weakened, or Xi Jinping has other plans within the party, is still undecided. Whether the propaganda system is facing a “major purge” is seen as an indicator of Wang Huning’s future moves.
