Myanmar’s military declared a state of emergency on Monday, detaining senior government leaders in response to allegations of fraud during November’s general election, Reuters reported.
A video address broadcast on military-owned television said power had been handed over to the commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing ( Min Aung Hlaing).
The following statement was read on (Myawaddy) Myawaddy TV (MWD):
“Huge discrepancies were found in the voter lists used in the multi-party general election held on November 8, and the Union Election Commission failed to address the issue.
While national sovereignty must come from the people, the horrific voter list fraud that occurred during the democratic general election is antithetical to ensuring a stable democratic system. The refusal to address the voter list fraud and the failure to act and follow the request to postpone the parliamentary sessions of the Lower and Upper Houses is inconsistent with Article 417 of the 2018 Constitution, which refers to “acts or attempts to take over the sovereignty of the Union by wrongful and forcible means” and could lead to the disintegration of national unity.
As a result of these acts, many protests have taken place in Myanmar’s townships and cities to demonstrate their distrust of the Union Election Commission. Other parties and people have also been found to engage in different forms of provocation, including the display of flags, which is very harmful to national security.
Unless this issue is resolved, it will block the path of democracy and therefore must be addressed by law. Therefore, a state of emergency was declared in accordance with Article 417 of the 2008 Constitution. In order to review and act on the voter list, the power to make laws, administer the system and administer justice in the country is transferred to the Commander-in-Chief, in accordance with Article 418 (a) of the 2008 Constitution.
The state of emergency shall be in effect throughout the country and shall last for a period of one year from the date of the proclamation of this order under Article 417 of the 2008 Constitution.”
