Frontline interview: the bitterness in the hearts of pig farmers in the hardest hit areas of the epidemic

The outbreak of a new round of CCP virus in Heilongjiang has been going on for more than 20 days, and villagers from many villages in Suihua Wangkui County, the hardest hit area of the Epidemic, were all moved to centralized quarantine. Wangkui, a major pig-rearing county in the region, has experienced a series of difficulties such as shortage of feed and cash flow problems due to road closures, making it difficult for many pig-rearing professionals to sleep at night.

Official reports show that the pig industry is the county’s founding industry in Wangkui County, and as of last year, the county has grown to 15 pig farms with more than 10,000 heads and 57 pig farms with more than 1,000 heads. 2019, the county’s pig rearing capacity reached 1.72 million heads. However, after the outbreak of the epidemic, the county’s pig farmers also suffered from it.

Peng Liang (a pseudonym), a professional pig farmer in Wangkui County, said that in previous years, large pigs went to sell before the year, but now there is no collection of pigs at all because the roads are closed and Home isolation.

“Feed transport difficulties, this pig no one to collect, we do not immediately shortage of funds? If you don’t collect pigs, how can you have funds? Like us pig farmers, we have to invest 40,000 to 50,000 every month, who can help us with this fund? If you don’t accept us, it’s over!”

Peng Liang said, now the local four or five hundred pounds of large pigs are not sold, too much. There is no source of funds, but the money for feed still has to come out, many farmers suffer from turnover difficulties.

“Many farmers are facing more difficulties than me!” Peng Liang said, “Some pig farmers, who are faced with several thousand pounds of feed a day, are now facing greater difficulties, not that he can’t buy bush, even if (the government) opened (proof) for him to buy, he is also facing turnover difficulties.”

“For example, you have 100 pigs, you can not sell, finished you then borrow 100,000 yuan (to buy feed), which is not a deficit!”

Peng Liang said, now they can only wait for the government’s order, and slaughter enterprises which day to collect pigs. But he is now worried that slaughter companies take advantage of the local epidemic to give them a price.

“January 10, the price was 17.8 yuan a catty, if after the epidemic, now the slaughter enterprises to give us pig price pressure, it is not the end of it!” Peng Liang said, under normal circumstances, if a pig to earn 500 is also OK, he does not want to profiteer.

Peng Liang said, due to the closure of the city, the transport of feed is also difficult, and now the Family feed reserves can only ten days eight days, these two days (government) said let (traffic) open a little, but he did not see the opening.

Peng Liang said, they have closed the road there, home isolation, do not let you go out, can not string door, buy vegetables can not go to buy, want to eat a green vegetable is impossible. Fortunately, the rural areas at least have a little reserve of potatoes, sauerkraut and other things for emergencies.

For the mainland pig industry, Peng Jun, who has been raising pigs for more than 10 years, feels that the price is unstable, “causing some people to make money, while others lose enough!”

The outbreak of swine fever on the mainland the year before last caused pork prices to plummet, while hundreds of millions of pigs were culled, resulting in a shortage of pork, followed by a surge in pork prices.

Peng Liang said, he started his own business for more than a decade, the journey has been very difficult, the good policies of the state never turn you, risky, you have to have experience, but also capital, the pigs have a disease you can not control.

“If this price is stable, we are also relieved to raise, and do not want to profiteer. It this price fluctuates back and forth, today 18, tomorrow 14, dry our industry, the whole we have long sleepless nights, like a mental illness, today want to sell pigs, drop in price, tomorrow do not want to sell, and up …… too tangled.”

On February 1, the CCP officially announced 22 new confirmed cases in Heilongjiang Province, including 9 cases in Suihua City and 13 cases in Harbin City; 9 new so-called asymptomatic infections, including 6 cases in Wangkui County, Suihua City and 3 cases in Harbin City. The unsealing of Wangkui remains indefinite.
