Last week, Anthony Fauci, Biden‘s chief medical adviser to the president, said wearing two masks would “probably” better protect people from the Covid-19 virus. Michael Osterholm, a member of Biden’s outbreak advisory board and an infectious disease expert, offered another opinion.
Osterholm, director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota (USA), said wearing two masks may increase the probability of contracting the CCP virus.
“When we talk about dual masks, remember that we’re really only talking about trying to prevent a virus from being excreted into the air by me, or me breathing in a virus from the air that’s excreted by someone else, which is a function of a face-fit-cum-face-filter.” Osterholm said in an interview with NBC’s political program “Meet the Press” on Sunday.
Osterholm also compared the masks to swim goggles, noting that leaks usually occur at the fit, not the lens. “So our concern is that a lot of these masks have actually compromised the fit or the filtering ability. If you add another mask, it may actually make it harder for air to pass through the two cloth areas and then at that point, it actually causes more air to leak out the sides, which actually enhances your ability to get infected.” Osterholm said.
Last spring, Forsythe advised people not to wear a mask. Now he’s advising everyone to wear one, or even two, and forever.
Sen. Rand Paul, a Kentucky Republican who is a physician by profession, made a disturbing prediction about masks last Wednesday, saying that mandatory masks will never go away as long as the left is in power.
“They’re never going to be kind. These people will always make you wear a mask.” Paul told U.S. radio host Todd Herman, who will succeed Rush Limbaugh.
Don’t listen to the people who say you should still wear a mask even if everyone is vaccinated, Paul said. Study after study has shown that when you implement these measures, infections continue to rise. Even President Biden acknowledged this the other day. The trajectory of the virus is not affected by anything people are currently doing.
Herman concluded by emphasizing that “the masks are not going away …… technocrats don’t want to give up control.”
