Taiwan‘s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on January 31 that the “Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters” had been signed by Polish President Andrzej Duda on the 28th, and that the two sides would strengthen the fight against transnational crime and enhance judicial cooperation on the basis of respect for the common values of human rights and the rule of law. A press release issued by Taiwan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “The ‘Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters’ was signed in June 2019 by representatives of both sides in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and was signed by Foreign Minister Wu Chiu-shep, Minister of Justice Tsai Ching-hsiang and visiting Polish Undersecretary of Justice Lukasz Piebiak. According to this agreement, the two sides shall notify each other in writing after completing their respective internal necessary procedures, Taiwan said. The Legislative Yuan notified Poland after the completion of the third reading in December 2019; now Poland has also completed the relevant domestic procedures, including the House of Representatives and the Senate passed without objection, the President signed and announced, Poland will also formally notify Taiwan by letter, and the notification date will be the effective date of the “Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters”.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Taiwan pointed out that Poland is the first country in Europe to sign a criminal justice cooperation agreement with Taiwan, which covers five major areas, including mutual legal assistance in criminal matters, extradition, transfer of sentenced persons, sharing of legal and practical opinions, prosecution of crimes and sharing of information on crime prevention.
According to Taiwan, “Based on the common values of respecting human rights and the rule of law, the two sides will strengthen the fight against transnational crime, enhance judicial cooperation, and fully protect people’s rights; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also pleased to see that Taiwan and Poland have signed a number of agreements in recent years, including the ‘Taiwan-Bolivia Agreement for the Avoidance of Double Taxation’ and the ‘Taiwan-Bolivia Agreement on Cooperation in Science and Higher Education. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is also pleased to see that Taiwan and Poland have completed the procedures related to the ‘Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters’ after the ‘Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Avoidance of Double Taxation’ and the ‘Taiwan-Poland Agreement on Cooperation in Higher Education’.
