Myanmar leader Ung San Suu Kyi is rumored to have been detained.
According to Reuters, Myanmar’s military arrested President Win Myint, Myanmar’s substantive leader Ung San Suu Kyi and several senior members of the ruling party in a suspected coup d’état on January 1.
A spokesman for the ruling National League for Democracy said that Burmese leader Ung San Suu Kyi and other senior members of the ruling party had been detained in an early morning raid.
The incident comes days after tensions between the elected government and the military escalated, raising fears of a coup. The military has been alleging election fraud.
According to spokesman Myo Nyunt, Ung San Suu Kyi, President Win Myint and other leading figures were “taken away” early in the morning. I want to tell the people not to act rashly, I want them to act according to the law,” he said. He added that he may also be detained.
