Britain says China’s implementation of national security laws in Hong Kong violates the 1997 Sino-British Joint Declaration and is therefore introducing a new immigration policy for Hong Kong residents, which will take effect on Sunday.
The Home Office estimates that between 123,000 and 153,700 British national (overseas) passport holders will immigrate to Britain with the new visa policy in the first year, increasing the total number to 258,000-322,400 over the next five years.
The visa fee for a five-year validity visa is £250 per person plus an immigration health surcharge of up to £624 per year.
“We have always made it clear that we will not turn a blind eye to issues involving Hong Kong,” British Foreign Secretary Raab said in an e-mailed statement.” We will live up to our historic responsibility to the people of Hong Kong.”
The Newcastle pneumonia outbreak and issues involving Hong Kong and Xinjiang have led to the current low point in relations between London and Beijing. China insists it has done nothing wrong on these issues.
