Chinese rights activist Guo Feixiong is missing after going on a hunger strike at Shanghai Pudong Airport.
Chinese rights activist Guo Feixiong went on a hunger strike at Shanghai Pudong Airport on the evening of January 28 to protest the authorities’ ban on him leaving the country to visit his sick wife in the U.S. We called the International Airport Bureau of the Shanghai Municipal Public Security Bureau and received only an “unclear” reply. More than 100 overseas pro-democracy activists have signed a letter calling for attention to the development, and the Chinese Democracy Institute in Taiwan has also launched a solidarity campaign in Taiwan.
According to a Twitter message retweeted by overseas pro-democracy activist Zhou Fenglock, Guo Feixiong said, “Chinese customs has officially announced that I am not allowed to leave the country on suspicion of endangering national security, etc. I am now on an indefinite hunger strike at Pudong Airport, and I ask the Chinese people and governments and people around the world to help me urgently.” When we called the Pudong Terminal Police Station of the Shanghai Public Security Bureau’s International Airport Branch, the police officer simply replied, “I don’t know,” and hung up.
Guo Feixiong’s wife, Zhang Qing, is currently in Maryland, where she had surgery last Saturday for colon cancer that has spread. Guo Feixiong recently issued a statement that he had purchased a flight to Washington, D.C., at 4:50 p.m. on the 28th in hopes of caring for his wife, who is seriously ill. He has indicated that he will go on an indefinite hunger strike on the evening of the 28th if he is intercepted at the airport as ordered by the Ministry of Public Security.
To stop Guo Feixiong hunger strike caused international concern Zeng Jianyuan: Guo fears imprisonment
The Chinese Democratic Institute launched a solidarity campaign in Taiwan, the chairman of the board of directors Zeng Jianyuan mentioned that the latest news is that Guo Feixiong disappeared from the airport, the outside world does not know where he is, may be detained by the Chinese Communist Party public security departments, to prevent him from the airport hunger strike action to attract international attention.
Zeng Jianyuan: “We in Taiwan to pay attention to this matter, because this is a humane event, put in the context of the current Sino-US relations, I think that if China allows Mr. Guo Feixiong to visit his Family, his wife in the United States, I think it is a good opportunity to improve Sino-US relations before the Chinese New Year is approaching.”
Zeng Jianyuan pointed out that Guo Feixiong had already received a goodwill response from Chinese Premier Li Keqiang before his trip, and was only allowed to apply for a passport and obtain a ticket, but was prevented from going to the United States by an order from the public security department before boarding the plane.
Wuer Kaixi: If the Chinese Communist Party has not yet lost its humanity, Guo Feixiong should be allowed to go to the U.S.
The leader of the June Fourth Movement, Wuer Kaixi, said that at such a Time of challenges to human relationships, such actions will certainly make the Taiwanese people feel even more disgusted with the Chinese government, and he hopes that the Chinese government will prove him wrong in what he said today.
Wuer Kaixi: “We are all watching the new Biden regime, and he has expressed in words many times since he came to power to maintain his position on the Chinese government, but whether he can do so, I think whether he can lend a helping hand to the Guo Feixiong case is a very important test point.”
DPP legislator Hong Shenhan suggested that Guo Feixiong only wanted to go to the United States to take care of his cancer-stricken wife, but the most basic family reunion and care were not available. In the past few years, there have been too many human rights persecutions and inhumane incidents in China, whether in Xinjiang, Tibet, or even Hong Kong, which is more familiar to Taiwan. “As we see incident after incident, people are likely to say that this is a lack of confidence on the part of the Xi Jinping regime, and we really want to call on the Chinese Communist authorities, if they are really confident that they will become a great power, this kind of petty tactics, this kind of persecution, they really should stop doing it.”
Zhang Qing (L), wife of Chinese rights activist Guo Feixiong, listens to her daughter Yang Tianjiao during a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in Washington, D.C., after she spoke at a news conference, Oct. 29, 2013. Zhang Qing has called for the release of her husband, Guo Feixiong, who was detained for the fourth time on Aug. 17, 2013.
Fu Xiqiu has contacted U.S. State Department officials concerned about rescuing Guo Feixiong
The head of the China Aid Association, Pastor Fu Xiqiu, once rescued Guo Feixiong’s wife and daughter from political asylum in the United States 12 years ago. The Chinese Communist Party is calling on Guo Feixiong to visit his wife, who is suffering from cancer, from a basic humane perspective. Fu Xiqiu also revealed that he had contacted the U.S. State Department officials and received a response that their team was working hard and concerned, but no specific action was proposed.
Fu Xiqiu: “I hope that through the exposure of the report, the Biden Administration has some pressure to negotiate with the Chinese government. Because this is in a sense a very simple matter, Guangdong, Hubei Province Public Security Department has issued a passport to allow him to leave, suddenly using very bad means to prevent normal humane visits and family reunions, is indeed a minus for the Chinese Communist Party.”
Fu Xiqiu pointed out that Guo Feixiong has suffered so much for more than 20 years, which is obvious to everyone, and the record from the Bush era is clear to everyone, his wife’s terminal cancer can not come to visit, from the perspective of U.S.-China relations, the new Biden administration should take a stand on this.

The statement said, “This inhumane behavior of the Chinese Communist Party is another proof of the regime’s increasing fascism. Guo Feixiong has announced the start of an indefinite hunger strike. We call on the outside world to follow this development and on Western countries to assist Guo Feixiong’s wish to come to the United States to visit his family through diplomatic means.”
Taiwan’s Land Commission concerned about Guo Feixiong’s case calls for an end to the repression of dissidents
Taiwan’s Council of Land Affairs (CLA) also expressed concern about Guo Feixiong’s refusal to leave the country. The Council said that the Chinese Communist Party authorities have been restricting personal freedom for a long time in the name of “suspected of endangering national security” and has caused common concern in the international community. The Commission once again called on the Chinese Communist Party to respect and treat people with different opinions rationally, and to stop suppressing people’s freedom of dissent, religion, speech, and other basic human rights, and the government will continue to pay attention to the human rights situation in mainland China.
Guo Feixiong was sentenced to six years in prison for expressing solidarity with the Southern Weekend newspaper and demanding that officials disclose their assets. Guo Feixiong’s wife, Zhang Qing, who is based in Maryland, recently developed colon cancer and it has spread. He sent a letter to Chinese Premier Li Keqiang earlier this month, asking that authorities be ordered to return his passport so he can reunite with his family in the United States.
