The leaders of the Czech political parties agreed in principle on Wednesday (27) that Chinese companies should not be allowed to bid for the construction of a new nuclear power plant with a capacity of 1,200 megawatts for national security reasons. The Chinese Embassy in Prague protested this on Thursday (28).
A spokesman for the Chinese Embassy in the Czech Republic said Thursday that China is seriously concerned about the Czech government’s intention to exclude Chinese companies from the tender for the construction of a new unit of the Dukvani nuclear power plant, and firmly opposes the Czech side’s generalization of the concept of national security, which creates artificial obstacles for Chinese companies to enter the Czech market and undermines their legitimate rights and interests.
China General Nuclear Corporation (CGN) is competing with companies from France, South Korea, the United States and Russia for the multibillion-dollar project, the largest Czech investment in decades. The Czech government has not yet shut out Russian companies, although NATO and EU national security agencies also oppose Russian participation in the project. The Czech government has not yet finalized the terms of the bid.
According to foreign media, Czech President Milos Zeman has been hoping to establish good relations with China, but since problems with China’s Huaxin Energy, the main acquirer of Czech assets, a number of projects are not planned to be implemented.
