The nominees for the cabinet of the new U.S. President Joe Biden have recently been vetted by the Senate, and the nominee, Ambassador to the United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield, was exposed by the media on Wednesday (27) local Time that she had received funding from the Confucius Institute and had praised the progress of the Chinese Communist Party‘s “One Belt, One Road” in Africa.
The Washington Post reported that Thomas Greenfield gave a speech on “China-U.S.-Africa relations” on Oct. 25, 2019, at the 5th anniversary of the Confucius Institute at Savannah State University, under the circumstances of receiving a $1,500 grant.
According to a transcript obtained by the media, Thomas Greenfield praised Beijing‘s “One Belt, One Road” speech as a catalyst for progress in Africa’s economic and even cultural Life.
Thomas-Greenfield criticized the Trump administration for viewing Africa as a battleground for great power competition. She said the U.S. and China are not fighting a Cold War and that the notion that U.S.-China competition is good for Africa is wrong.
Republican Senator Marc Rubio (R-Fla.) said Thomas Greenfield failed to realize that the Chinese Communist Party was using state-sponsored Confucius Institutes for propaganda in the U.S., which in itself is alarming.
After being challenged by the senator, Thomas Greenfield herself admitted that her previous remarks at the Confucius Institute were a “huge mistake.
She said, “China (the Chinese Communist Party) is a strategic adversary, their actions threaten our security, they threaten our way of life ….. They are a global threat.
