The White House said Monday (25) that the Chinese Communist Party poses a clear challenge to the United States and that the Biden administration is seeking “strategic patience” in response. In response, former Director of National Intelligence John Ratcliffe countered that intelligence agencies are not suggesting that the United States should be patient with the Chinese Communist Party, but rather that it should act aggressively.
Ratcliffe also stressed that there is no way forward for appeasement when it comes to the CCP.
White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Monday that the U.S. and China are in a fierce competition and that Beijing is clearly challenging U.S. Security, prosperity and values, which calls for a new approach, and that Biden will take a “patient” approach to the matter.
“We intend to deal with this with some strategic patience,” she said. She said, adding that the White House will work with Congress on a bipartisan basis and with international allies and partners.
Psaki also said President Biden will “take a multilateral approach to engaging with China (the Chinese Communist Party).”
Asked whether Biden would retain tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars of Chinese goods imposed by former President Trump, Psaki said the policy would be evaluated and no decision had been made.
In an interview with Fox News on Monday, former Director of National Intelligence Ratcliffe pushed back on the Biden Administration‘s strategy toward China and urged Biden to take aggressive action in response to Beijing’s encroachments, rather than delaying them.
Ratcliffe said available intelligence suggests that the Trump Administration‘s hard-line China Policy should continue (by the Biden administration) without interruption.
“All I can tell you is that what Jen Psaki said is completely inconsistent with what the intelligence reveals.” Ratcliffe said, “The intelligence agencies are not saying we should have patience with China (the Chinese Communist Party), they are saying we should take action against China (the Chinese Communist Party).”
“The Trump administration’s intelligence-based policy should be followed.” He added, “I had increased our spending on China by 20 percent in the intelligence community’s budget from an intelligence collection perspective – and it should increase even more in the future. But what I’m hearing are some indications that maybe we’ll back off and we’d like to have a better relationship with China (the Chinese Communist Party). But there is no way out of the path of appeasement when it comes to China (the Chinese Communist Party).”
Ratcliffe had an opinion piece in the Wall Street Journal on Dec. 3, 2020, revealing that the CCP was developing biological soldiers.
“As director of national intelligence, I oversee the intelligence community, and my office produces presidential briefings detailing the threats facing the nation. Let me convey one thing to the American people from this unique perspective, and that is that China (the Chinese Communist Party) poses the greatest threat to the United States today and the greatest threat to democracy and freedom around the world since World War II.” He wrote.
