The Philippine province of Kemeti has scrapped a $10 billion deal for an airport renovation project, one of the biggest projects involving Chinese companies during the administration of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Duterte has sought to improve relations with Beijing since coming to power in 2016. China Communications Construction was one of the Chinese companies blacklisted by the U.S. in August. But Philippine authorities say the blacklisting had nothing to do with the disqualification of the winning bid.
The Philippines disqualified China Jiaotong from winning a bid for a $10 billion airport renovation project. The Philippine province of Kemeti has canceled a deal for a $10 billion airport renovation project in 2019 that saw China Communications Construction (CCCC) and Philippine company MacroAsia win the winning bid to work with the Kemeti provincial government to upgrade Sangley (Sangley) Airport, Reuters reported today.
“The selection and notice of award for the Sangley Point International Airport project released on Feb. 12, 2020, was cancelled,” MacroAsia told the Stock Exchange on Wednesday. Krabiji Governor Juanito Victor Remulla told Reuters that the consortium’s documents were “deficient in three to four areas. We think it shows that they are not fully committed to the project,” Remulla said on Facebook, according to Remulla, adding that the Krabi Di provincial government will start new negotiations to find a private sector partner to move the airport project forward.
According to Reuters, CCCC was one of the Chinese companies blacklisted by the U.S. in August. According to Remulla, the blacklisting had nothing to do with the disqualification of the winning bid.
