Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vt.), just hours after being sworn in for Trump‘s impeachment, felt ill and was taken to the hospital, where he was discharged Home shortly after being given a checkup, according to The Hill (Jan. 26).
Sen. Patrick Leahy, who is preparing to preside over former President Trump’s impeachment trial, was briefly taken to the hospital Tuesday (Jan. 26) and then discharged, Leahy’s office said in a statement.
Sen. David Carle (D-Vermont) said Leahy, 80, was admitted to the hospital at his office in the Capitol “after not feeling well” and was examined by an attending physician. Leahy later left the hospital and returned home.
“Out of an abundance of caution, the treating physician recommended that he be returned to a local hospital for observation,” Carr said. Carr said.
“After obtaining test results and undergoing a thorough examination, Senator Leahy is now at home.” In a statement late Tuesday (26), Carr added: “He is looking forward to getting back to work.”
Leahy was taken to the hospital hours after he was sworn in to the Senate for the Trump impeachment trial. Impeachment proceedings are expected to begin Feb. 8.
Senate Pro Tempore Leahy is constitutionally the second-highest ranking official in the Senate, behind Vice President Kamala Devi Harris. After Harris and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), Leahy is third in the presidential succession order.
Leahy will oversee Trump’s impeachment next month to replace Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts (John Roberts). John Roberts chose not to preside over this impeachment trial because Trump is no longer serving as president.
