Biden’s ‘bold’ immigration policy threatens to put Democrats at political risk

Upon taking office, President Biden proposed that he would push for comprehensive immigration reform to provide a pipeline for the estimated 11 million illegal immigrants to become legal citizens, as well as amend the law to overturn many of former President Trump‘s policies to clamp down on immigration; an Associated Press analysis pointed out that Biden’s bold immigration reform plan could put the Democratic Party at political risk.

Biden’s plan is the immigration policy that many Latino initiative groups want, but immigration policy will also have to compete with Biden’s other highly ambitious administrative goals; including the $1.9 trillion New Crown (CCP virus) bailout bill, infrastructure plans to improve green energy initiatives, and expanding health insurance.

Even under the best of circumstances, handling such extensive legislative business is difficult enough, let alone nearly impossible with the current divided Congress.

The fastest growing Latino voting bloc in the U.S. is concerned that Biden and congressional leaders may compromise in order to reach a quick deal, or fail to pass a bill at all.

If Latino voters ultimately feel betrayed, it could have far-reaching political implications for the Democratic Party.

There are many warning signs for the 2020 election, and the Democratic Party is committed to building a cross-community coalition that could face a crisis without key Latino support.

Democratic Senator Robert Menendez, who supports Biden’s immigration plan, said Biden must push for immigration reform as soon as possible, which is crucial for Hispanic voters; but he also said unapologetically that Congress needs at least ten Republican senators to fall in line to get the bill through.
