Italian Prime Minister Antonio Conte, who has been in office for 1 year, 4 months and 20 days, submitted his resignation on Tuesday (Jan. 26) in order to seek to form another new coalition government. Conte, whose regime has been weakened by the departure of one of the parties in his coalition government, is now hoping to get the support of President Sergio Mattarella in an attempt to reorganize a new government and stay in power.
Italian Prime Minister Antonio Conte announced on Monday evening that he will resign on Tuesday. According to a statement from Conte’s office, the prime minister called a meeting of ministers at 9 a.m. Tuesday to “inform his ministers of his intention to go to the presidential palace to hand in his resignation.
Prime Minister Conte wants the support of President Mattarella to reorganize his cabinet in an attempt to stay in power. This is the third government since 2018. He hopes to implement an economic plan of more than 200 billion euros, aimed at reviving the engine of the third country in the eurozone economy. Italy’s economy is ravaged by the new crown Epidemic that has killed at least 85,000 people infected with the disease.
Italy’s political crisis began after former Prime Minister Lenzi stepped down in 2016. Then, the government came under fire for weeks for its mismanagement of the new crown crisis and Conte’s economic spending policies.
In order to stay in power and avoid resignation, Conte had to attend last week’s parliamentary session to face a vote of confidence in both chambers. The vote in the lower house passed easily. But the vote in the Senate was narrowly defeated after senators from the IV party withdrew.
In the hope of securing the integration of independent or dissident party members in Congress, perhaps ultimately enabling him to continue to dominate the current government team by reshuffling cabinet members, Conte thus engaged in intense behind-the-scenes negotiations, but the integration ultimately failed.
