As of Jan. 23, the “Recall Newsom” campaign had collected more than 1.2 million signatures, which could make Newsom one of the few governors in the state’s history to be successfully removed from office due to growing public discontent with Gov. This could make Newsom one of the few governors in the state’s history to have a successful recall process.
Newsom has failed Californians,” reads the “Recall Newsom 2020” website (recallgavin2020.com). Unaffordable housing, record numbers of homeless, rising crime, failing school administration, independent contractors losing jobs, ballooning pension debt, to prisons being emptied during Home health care. Newsom needs to be held accountable and must step down.”
Recently, “Recall Newsom” signs have been seen frequently in downtown main streets, in front of shopping malls, on beaches, in parks and at various protest sites in cities across Southern California. Some people have also put “Recall Newsom” signs on their vehicles.
The campaign’s sponsor tweeted on Jan. 23, “We’ve had over 1.2 million signatures since we updated our tweet on the 22nd, not including the pile of signatures we received yesterday that have yet to be counted.” Under the rules, the recall process can be initiated if about 1.5 million qualifying signatures are collected by March 17.
So far, the pro-rescall Newsom campaign side has raised more than $1.7 million to collect signatures. The volunteer team hopes to collect at least 300,000 to 500,000 more valid signatures in the remaining six weeks.
Repeated Civilian Attempts to Remove Newsom
According to the California Secretary of State’s website, there have been seven attempts to remove Newsom from office in the less than two years he has been governor. The first 6 times were unsuccessful due to insufficient signatures, but each Time they failed, another recall campaign followed.
Earlier, some people said in interviews that Newsom’s policies of constantly raising taxes, giving welfare to illegal immigrants, supporting abortion, etc. were harming Californians. And during the Epidemic, Newsom ordered the release of felons and violent and other criminals, extended tenant orders prohibiting the eviction of non-paying tenants, and shut down businesses, further destroying California’s economy and law and order, and public discontent is growing deeper.
Data shows that when news broke that Newsom violated his own epidemic prevention order last year, asking people to stay home while he went to high-end restaurants and sat around meals with several people without a mask, the number of signatures in support of his removal surged by 400,000 in a short period of time.
Californians Respond to Civil Appeal
In 2003, California’s Democratic governor, Gray Davis, was successfully removed from office. The number of signatures for the recall of Newsom is approaching a critical mass, and Mike Netter, one of the founders of the movement, has said that the recall of Newsom is imperative.
However, Ms. Chen, a Chinese-American volunteer, is worried: “There is still one obstacle to successfully start the recall process, and that is the fear that the signatures we have collected will be reviewed and found to be invalid, so everyone is now sprinting and calling on all those who are dissatisfied with the status quo in California to respond positively and sign quickly to remove Newsom from office.”
